Giles Bennett

Director / Lead Developer

Giles started his professional career as a lawyer, handling mergers and acquisitions initially in Mayfair, before steadily moving eastwards across London via Holborn to The City. Web design, however, had always been a hobby since his days at university, creating sites on Geocities armed with nothing but Notepad.

In 2008, after leaving the law, he stumbled across a freelancer website where he promptly bid for, and was awarded, a job fixing an issue on a Geordie bed company's website. He was gratified to be paid £25 the next day, and it was then that he realised that people might pay him actual money for doing something he enjoyed doing anyway.

He never looked back. He hung out his shingle as a freelance developer, and rapidly built up a specialism in e-commerce websites powered by Magento, Wordpress and Drupal.

In 2013, he founded HummingbirdUK, a name chosen because it was one of the few words in the English language with his initials in the middle of it, the only other being "gangbang", which didn't have quite the same ring to it. One month later Google released their Hummingbird update, which crippled his SEO strategy for the next two years.

Over the years, he developed a specialism in Laravel, building dozens of sites for companies big and small using the TALL (Tailwind, Alpine, Laravel and Livewire) stack, but kept his hand in with Magento, as it moved to Magento 2, and as Wordpress continued to grow.

What little spare time he has he spends playing boardgames with his wife and two sons, walking their two greyhounds, learning to draw and having piano lessons for the first time in 35 years. His scales need work, but he can bash out a decent 'Claire de Lune'.
